WEBSITE: Canadian Fashion Scholars:
http://fashionscholars.wix.com/home
PROGRAM: Wix
CONCEPT: Fashion Studies in Canada is an emerging field, and no nation-wide organization or network of fashion scholars existed prior to the workshops and symposia I organized in Montreal and Vancouver. The website serves as a virtual network and information hub that allows fashion scholars to collaborate and connect with fellow researchers, scholars, and professionals.
NEXT STEP: Symposium and events updates, resources, expand nation-wide network.
NEW SKILLS ACQUIRED: Design, lay-out, photo-editing

WEBSITE: Urban Chic Book Series website:
http://urban-chic.net/
PROGRAM: Wordpress
COLLABORATORS: I designed this website in collaboration with Markus Reisenleitner (York University, Toronto) for the Urban Chic book series we collaborate on, published by Intellect Press.
CONCEPT: My idea was to create an online presence for our book series that would both represent and supplement the printed books. It started as an information site that provides basic information about our two published volumes on Berlin and Vienna, as well as on my upcoming volume on Montreal. It also provides additional links to articles, blog posts, reviews, and photos, as well as information about the authors and fashion events in Montreal and Toronto. Moreover, it provides our contact information for potential future authors, interested in collaborating on a volume.
NEXT STEP: We are currently working on integrating interactive maps for the “Locations of Chic” for each of the cities. The idea is to design a visualization and geo-mapping tool to help locate points of interests for researchers and wider public, using the research and analysis provided in the Berliner Chic: A Locational History of Berlin Fashion (2011) book. It is intended for a wide audience of people interested in the city of Berlin, Berlin culture, fashion, music, design, and history. This tool will facilitate easier access to the locations specified in the book, and empathize connections, interpretations, and significance of the locations of chic in Berlin.

Research / Presentations Tools:

WEBSITE: Branding Berlin – Dissertation Project: http://berlindissertation.weebly.com/
PROGRAM: Weebly
CONCEPT: This website serves two purposes: to establish an online presence for my doctoral dissertation project, and to allow a permanent, easy-access presentation platform that I use for conference presentations. Allowing conference audiences to access my presentation and project on their own devices allows them to browse the site at their own pace and to return to it at their convenience for more information. The comment function also allows for an online discussion beyond the conference timeframe.
This type of digital visualization of my dissertation project has allowed me to both present and supplement my dissertation chapters, as well as to track the progress of my work (by updating the website before each conference presentation).
NEW SKILLS ACQUIRED: Web design and lay-out using Weebly templates.

Teaching Tools:

WEBSITE: McGill German Studies: Links, Resources, and Culture: http://german202mcgill.wordpress.com/
PROGRAM: Wordpress
CONCEPT: Course lecturers at McGill use a lot of web materials to supplement language learning. Traditionally, the links to online materials used to be uploaded to WEB CT or My Courses for each course by all the instructors individually and manually. I built this site to collect all the links in one place, with additional categories for different courses, as well as other cultural links, including travel information for our students.

Blogs:

BLOG: Suites Culturelles: Cultural Analysis blog: http://suitesculturelles.wordpress.com/
(300-500 views per day)
PROGRAM: Wordpress
CONCEPT: I created this cultural analysis blog to write reviews about cultural events in Montreal, Berlin, Vienna, and other cities I work on. Eventually I added other pages such as Photography and Photo Essays to include other interests. This blog has not only helped me develop my blogging and freelance journalism skills, but to collect research materials and posts on larger (book and publication) projects I work on.

BLOG: Les Carabinieres: Photography blog: http://carabinieres.wordpress.com/
PROGRAM: Wordpress
CONCEPT: I designed this blog specifically for a photography project I started in 2010, which entailed taking one picture a day for 365 days. Simultaneously, I read up on theories of photography and tried to match my photographs to different theoretical themes and concepts. In 2012, I repeated the project but with a different theme, reading up on theories of happiness and taking one photo a day for a year that would somehow reflect the theme and theory of happiness.

Social Media Tools:

I created several group pages on Facebook for the various teaching institutions I worked at, including McGill, Goethe Institut, and several academic associations that I belong to. These group pages allow people at the various institutions to stay in touch even after their courses end, and to exchange valuable links and information related to the different subject areas. The McGill German Studies group is the most used and active of all, with regular posts by current and former students and faculty about all kinds of German-related topics and information:
- Canadian Fashion Scholars Facebook Group
- McGill Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures (LLCU) Facebook Group
- Canadian University Teachers of German (CAUTG) Facebook Group
- Canadian Comparative Literature Association (CCLA) Facebook Group
